Preparing For Jesus To Return

Jesus is coming back. We may not know the day or the hour, but Scripture makes it clear that His return is certain. For believers, this should not be a message that fills us with fear. It should fill us with hope, urgency, and a desire to live faithfully. The return of Jesus reminds us that this world is not our permanent home and that God is still moving history toward His perfect conclusion.

It is easy to become distracted by everyday life. We have work to finish, bills to pay, families to care for, and plans for the future. None of those things are wrong, but they can slowly become the center of our attention. We can become so focused on building a comfortable life here that we forget to prepare our hearts for eternity.

Preparing for Jesus to return does not mean staring at the sky, trying to predict dates, or living in constant anxiety about world events. It means following Jesus faithfully today. It means keeping our hearts close to Him, obeying His Word, loving people, sharing the gospel, and living with eternity in mind.

Make Sure You Know Jesus
The most important preparation is having a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Christianity is not simply believing that God exists or trying to be a good person. Salvation comes through trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior.

We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s standard. We cannot earn forgiveness through good behavior, church attendance, generosity, or religious activity. Jesus came to earth, lived without sin, died on the cross for us, and rose again. He paid the price for our sins so that we could be forgiven and receive eternal life.

Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Before worrying about signs, timelines, or prophecy, we should first ask the most personal question: Do I truly know Jesus? Have I placed my faith in Him, or am I simply familiar with Christian ideas?

Jesus is not asking us to clean ourselves up before coming to Him. He invites us to come as we are, turn away from our sin, and trust Him completely.

Stay Close To God
Preparing for Jesus means maintaining a close relationship with Him. Relationships grow through time, attention, honesty, and communication. Our relationship with God is no different.

Spend time reading the Bible, not simply to complete a religious task, but to know God’s heart. Talk to Him throughout the day. Bring Him your worries, questions, temptations, failures, and hopes. Worship Him when life is good and continue trusting Him when life is difficult.

Jesus warned that the pressures and distractions of life could cause people to become spiritually sleepy. It is possible to appear busy and successful while slowly drifting away from God. That is why we need to regularly examine our hearts.

Are we growing closer to Jesus, or are we slowly becoming more comfortable without Him?
James 4:8 gives us a simple promise: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

Live With A Clean HeartNone of us will become perfect in this life, but we should not become comfortable with sin. Preparing for Jesus means allowing the Holy Spirit to show us the areas of our lives that need to change.

There may be bitterness we need to release, dishonesty we need to confess, pride we need to surrender, or habits we need to leave behind. God does not reveal these things to shame us. He reveals them because He loves us and wants to make us more like Christ.

First John 1:9 tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Confession is not a one-time event. It is part of walking closely with God. When we sin, we should not hide from Him. We should come to Him quickly, receive His forgiveness, and ask for His strength to move forward.

Do The Work God Has Given You
Jesus told several stories about servants who were expected to remain faithful while waiting for their master to return. The message is clear. We should not waste the time God has given us.

Each of us has opportunities to serve Him. Some people are called to preach, teach, or lead. Others serve God by raising children, caring for family members, encouraging friends, giving generously, helping neighbors, or showing Christ’s love in the workplace.

You do not need a large platform to live a meaningful Christian life. Faithfulness often happens in small, ordinary moments that few people ever see.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Preparing for Jesus means asking, “Lord, what do You want me to do with the time, gifts, resources, and influence You have given me?”

Love People Well
esus said that people would recognize His followers by their love. As the world becomes more angry, divided, and confused, Christians should stand out through compassion, patience, truth, and grace.

Loving people does not mean agreeing with everything they believe or do. It means treating them with dignity, serving them when they are hurting, forgiving when we have been wronged, and pointing them toward Jesus.

We should also make peace while we still have the opportunity. Do not let pride keep you from apologizing. Do not allow bitterness to steal years of your life. Do not assume you will always have another chance to say what needs to be said.

Life is short, and eternity is real. Love people while they are here.

Share The Hope Of Jesus
If we truly believe Jesus is returning, we should care deeply about people who do not yet know Him. The gospel is too important to keep to ourselves.

Sharing Jesus does not always require a sermon. It may begin with a conversation, an act of kindness, an invitation to church, a personal testimony, or a simple explanation of why your faith matters to you.

First Peter 3:15 says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

We should never pressure or manipulate people, but we should not remain silent because we are afraid of an uncomfortable conversation. We can speak the truth with gentleness and trust God with the results.

Someone in your life may be more open to hearing about Jesus than you realize.

Do Not Become Consumed By Fear
The Bible teaches us to be watchful, but watchfulness is not the same as panic. Christians should not spend every day frightened by headlines, rumors, wars, economic problems, or predictions on social media.

Jesus told us that difficult times would come, but He also told us not to be afraid. Our confidence is not based on everything going smoothly. Our confidence is based on knowing that God is still in control.

When the world feels unstable, remember that God is not surprised. His plans have not changed. His promises have not failed. Jesus is still Lord.

Titus 2:13 describes Christ’s return as “the blessed hope.” It is not a hopeless event for those who belong to Him. It is the moment when faith becomes sight, suffering ends, and God makes all things new.

Be Ready TodayWe do not know when Jesus will return, and none of us knows exactly how many days we have left in this life. That is why preparation should not be delayed.

Do not wait until life becomes less busy to seek God. Do not wait until you are older to take your faith seriously. Do not wait for a crisis before you begin praying. Do not assume there will always be more time.

Jesus said in Matthew 24:44, “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

Being ready does not mean living perfectly. It means living surrendered. It means trusting Jesus, walking with Him, confessing our sins, loving others, and faithfully doing what He has called us to do.

The return of Jesus should change the way we live, but it should not rob us of peace. We can work, plan, laugh, celebrate, raise families, and enjoy God’s blessings while still keeping our hearts focused on eternity.

Jesus is coming back. Until then, let us be faithful, hopeful, loving, and ready.
