Moment of honesty, I get a little anxious. If you are in a season of worry, fear or anxiety I want to assure you that you are not alone. I mean that in two ways – you aren’t the only one and God is with you. You are not alone. Do not convince yourself you are. You are not alone.

Top 10 Misconceptions About Christianity

2/22/2019

Picture
1. Christianity Is Anti-science

The Bible itself doesn’t often speak directly about science. It doesn’t even try to answer most of the questions that science is asking.

Fundamentally, Christianity is certainly not as much anti-science as much as it is pro-faith. For what science cannot prove, Christianity relies on faith for. Many Christians believe that faith and science go hand-in-hand. As much as pro-science people try to paint Christians as anti-science, the reality is, this is not true.

2. Christians Are Always Happy

As much as we wish it was true, this simply isn’t. Although having a sense of purpose and assurance that there is meaning to life certainly make Christians fundamentally fulfilled, we all go through tough times and challenges. God never promised it would be easy, but he did promise we would never be alone.

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Romans 5:3-5

3. Good People Go To Heaven, Bad People Go To Hell

Technically, everyone deserves hell because of sin (even telling a lie or looking at a person with lust is a sin, so none of us are immune). However, we are forgiven from our sins through the belief of Jesus Christ.

So, good or bad, the only way to get to heaven is by accepting Jesus as your savior. However, that doesn't mean you should sin all you want. It doesn't work that way. Christians strive to stay away from sin out of respect for the sacrifice of Jesus and the direction of the Heavenly Father.

4. Christians Worship 3 Gods

This is simply a misunderstanding of the Trinity and what Christianity is based in. If this were true, then we would break the Ten Commandments. It's basically three in one. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one being. Although hard to understand to non-believers, this is what Christians believe.

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2 Corinthians 13:14

5. God Is Cruel Because He Allows Horrible Things To Happen

Most people and specifically non-believers struggle with this one. The reality is we live in a broken and sinful world where bad things happen. We can go back to when the devil chose to rebel against God because of his free will. That started the whole ball rolling, including the fall of Adam and Eve. After those events, we have lived in an imperfect world.

With sin in place and the free will that is graced upon us by God, this is the reality of our situation. Yes, God is all-powerful but that if He used that power to fix everything, it would also take away our free will, which is a precious gift from God. But the good news is Jesus sacrificed himself. This presented brand new gift for us from a loving God, salvation.

6. The New Testament Is Not Accurate As It Was Written Centuries After Christ

The truth was that many books were written around 25 years after Christ's death and by eyewitnesses of the life of Jesus Christ.

7. If You Are Christian, You Don’t Have To Be Good

This is utterly false. As mentioned above, Christians are forgiven of their sins by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. However, that doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want to. We are sent here to be an example and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ so that others can know Him and be saved. It’s hard to do that if Christians are running around blatantly sinning all the time.

“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” Galatians 6:9-10

8. The Bible Is So Riddled With Errors You Can’t Believe Any Of It

There is not one single “contradiction” in the Bible that isn’t readily explained through an understanding of the biblical text itself. The vast majority of supposed contradictions are easily cleared up through proper biblical interpretation, knowledge of the original language, historical context and biblical context.

9. Genesis Forces Christians To Believe That The Earth Is Only About 6,000 Years Old

This comes from people thinking in worldly terms and not heavenly terms. The sun and the moon were not created until the fourth day, so the idea of each “day” being 24-hour solar days is far from an absolute.

Further, the Hebrew word for “day” is “yom,” which doesn’t translate to a specified timeframe such as 24 hours. The Bible never tells us how God created or in what terms, only that God created. Don’t assume that God was wearing a watch or looking at a calendar, both of which are man-made.

10. There Are So Many Translations Of The Bible, There’s No Way Of Knowing What It Really Says

Don’t confuse translations with “versions.” All ancient manuscripts that we read today are offered as “translations” into English. Scholars know exactly what was written in the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. It’s the English language that keeps changing and causes frequent updates.
